POF Symposium at OFC/NFOEC 2012

The Plastic Optical Fiber Trade Organization (POFTO) is organizing a POF Symposium during OFC/NFOEC 2012 that will cover recent developments in POF technology, applications, technical standards, and new markets. Speakers from around the world will review opportunities for POF in areas such as Gigabit POF, high-temperature POF, aerospace applications, home networking, IPTV, consumer devices, smart grid, and solar energy, among others. POF Technology and Applications Pavilion

POFTO is also organizing a POF Technology and Applications Pavilion where companies will demonstrate their products and technologies during the show. Attendees can bring their problems and receive design advice on POF solutions from industry experts.

Williamsburg, VA (April 14, 2011) – Allowing the use of plastic optical fiber cost-effectively in a wide variety of applications, LEONI Fiber Optics introduces its new standard line of plastic optic fiber cables. The LEONI POF has proven effective in a number of medical, scientific and industrial applications ranging from illumination in a 25 gauge probe for vitreo-retinal surgery, to factory automation and industrial control (Profibus, ProfiNet, Industrial Ethernet, SERCOS) and control systems for wind and solar power systems.

Polymer optical fibers (POF) have been on the market for many years. Both the fiber core and the cladding are made of polymer. Key advantages of polymer optical fibers are high flexibility (high alternate bending resistance with smaller bending radii) as well as more economical connecting and transmission technology than in the case of glass.

Moreover, this type of fiber also has all the major benefits of a fiber optical cable connection:

• • EMC security,
• • Clear galvanic separation,
• • No crosstalk,
• • Low weight

POF can by now be used to bridge distances up to 70 meters, which is normally sufficient for industrial environments and smaller office as well as home networks. It is even possible to cover distances up to 150 meters by selecting suitable active components. POF cables are available for indoors and outdoors. A wide range of constructions are available depending on the requirement.

Based on the SMA connector system with additional rugged parts, ELII is introducing a 40-meter cable assembly using 1mm POF. Additional lengths are available on request. The polymer assemblies are used in excavators, cranes, forklifts, and the like. The 40-meter configuration has a maximum attenuation of approximately 180dB.
