03/24/2016 1:00 pm

Thursday, 24 March
10:00 - 13:00
Expo Theater II
Exhibit Hall B
Anaheim Convention Center, Anaheim, California, USA

The Plastic Optical Fiber Trade Organization (POFTO) will organize a POF Symposium during OFC 2016 that will cover recent developments in POF technology, applications, technical standards, industry progress and new markets. Speakers from around the world will review opportunities for POF in areas such as Gigabit POF, 4K/8K ultra high definition television (UHDTV), home networking, IPTV, consumer devices, aerospace & automobile applications, POF sources & sensors, and high-temperature POF, among others.

Organizer and Program Chair:

Hui Pan, Chief Economist, Plastic Optical Fiber Trade Organization (POFTO), USA

As Chief Economist, Dr. Pan tracks the global telecom and POF market developments, and is responsible for all marketing and business development activities of the POF trade organization. POFTO strives to actively promote the proliferation of Plastic Optical Fiber systems serving both data communication and non-data markets. Pan has a PhD in economics from Northeastern University in the United States.

10:00 – 10:30

Keynote Presentation

Advanced POF Technology for 8K Era

Yasuhiro Koike, Director, Keio Photonics Research Institute and Professor, Keio University, Japan

Prof. Koike earned his M.S. and PhD in the Graduate School of Engineering of Keio University. He is the director of Keio Photonics Research Institute and has been a professor at Keio University since 1997. Koike specializes in “photonics polymer” such as graded-index polymer optical fiber (GI POF), highly scattered optical transmission (HSOT) polymer, zero birefringence polymer, etc. He has just completed a four-year project of Face-to-Face Communication system based on photonics polymer technologies in the national program initiated by the Cabinet Office of Japan in 2014. He is a recipient of International Engineering and Technology Award of the Society of Plastics Engineers, and Medal with Purple Ribbon from the Imperial Palace.

Presenters

10:30 – 11:00

Boeing Commercial Airplanes Fiber Optic Evolution - Applications of POF in Commercial Aircraft

T. Kien Truong, Technical Fellow - Avionics & Fiber Optics, The Boeing Company,USA

Kien Truong is a Boeing Technical Fellow and has been with Boeing Commercial Airplanes (BCA) for 30 years working in Avionics. He enjoys TI swimming, scuba diving, kayaking, sailing, and also loves the challenges of designing and building his own homes on steep terrain.

11:00 – 11:30

POF Sensors for Aircraft Structures and Engine Monitoring

Joseba Zubia, Professor, University of the Basque Country, UPV/EHU, Spain

Prof. Zubia is a professor at the Department of Communications Engineering (UPV/EHU) in Spain. As the leader and coordinator of the research group "Applied Photonics Bilbao", Prof. Zubia started his research activities in the current fields - Polymer Optical Fibers and Applied Photonics - in 1993 as a supervisor of a PhD thesis. Since then, an ever growing research team coordinated by him has been carrying out an extensive research on the characteristics, possible applications and optimization of new types of POFs and related optical devices, such as POF-based optical amplifiers, lasers and sensors.

11:30 – 12:00

Graded-Index POF in Active Optical Cables

Whitney White , Co-Founder, Board Member, President & CTO, Chromis Fiberoptics, Inc., USA

Dr. Whitney White has more than 8 years of experience in polymer optical fiber (POF) research and development. Prior to founding Chromis Fiberoptics, White was a Member of Technical Staff at Bell Laboratories and OFS Laboratories. During his tenure at Bell Labs and OFS Labs,White was the principal inventor of the fluid pressure extrusion method of manufacturing POF.White also serves as a technical expert in POF in opticalfiber standards bodies. He holds 7 US patents in the field of POF. White earned his PhD and M.S. degrees from Stanford University. He is a summa cum laude graduate of Texas A&M University.
